What Is PET Acoustic Felt?

PET acoustic felt is a sound-absorbing material made primarily from recycled plastic bottles (PET). It's widely used in offices, schools, hospitality venues, healthcare facilities, and homes to reduce noise and enhance interior design.

Modern PET acoustic felt can be used for:

  • Decorative wall and ceiling panels
  • CNC-cut feature designs
  • Timber-look and printed finishes
  • Furniture and partition applications
  • Acoustic treatment and reverberation control

Why Is PET Acoustic Felt Sometimes Called “Autex”?

The simple answer is brand recognition.

For many years, Autex was one of New Zealand's most recognised suppliers of PET acoustic felt, so the brand name became shorthand for the product itself. It's similar to people saying "Band-Aid" instead of adhesive bandage or "Velcro" instead of hook-and-loop fastener.

While many people refer to PET acoustic felt as "Autex," Autex is actually just one manufacturer within a much larger product category.

Not All Acoustic Felt Is the Same

  • Although many PET felt products appear similar, differences in quality of finish, colour range, sheet size, consistency, installation efficiency, GSM and customisation options can significantly affect the final result. For designers and specifiers, these details matter.

The Axiom Alternative

  • At Axiom Acoustics, we've developed a PET acoustic felt range focused on design flexibility, installation efficiency, and architectural-quality finishes.

More Choice

  • 41+ contemporary colours
  • 30 WoodGrain timber-look finishes
  • Ongoing range development to match current design trends

Larger Panels

  • Our standard 2.8m-high panels suit modern commercial interiors, reducing joins and creating cleaner visual lines compared with traditional 2.4m sheet sizes.

Faster Installation

  • All panels are calibrated and trimmed square as standard, improving consistency and reducing time spent adjusting panels on site.

Premium Architectural Finish

  • A smooth, refined surface with minimal visible machine grain delivers a cleaner, more premium appearance in high-visibility spaces.

Local Stock & Customisation

  • We continue to expand our New Zealand stock holdings while offering in-house laser etching for logos, branding, wayfinding, patterns, and bespoke architectural features.

Responsive Support

  • As a specialist team, we provide practical specification advice, acoustic expertise, and responsive project support from concept through to installation.

The Bottom Line

When someone refers to PET acoustic felt as "Autex," they're usually using a well-known brand name to describe the product category.

Today, the market offers far more choice than ever before. Architects, designers, and builders can select from a range of acoustic felt solutions with different finishes, formats, colours, and performance characteristics.

At Axiom Acoustics, we believe the best specification isn't necessarily the most familiar brand name. It's the product that delivers the best outcome for the project.
